Reopening of the Municipal Market
The Santa Maria da Feira Municipal Market, an architectural icon designed by the prestigious Master Fernando Távora, will reopen its doors to the public on December 20, 2024, at 9:30 a.m., after a long-awaited and careful renovation. This rehabilitation work aimed to preserve the identity and historical value of the building, while at the same time modernizing it, adapting it to contemporary consumer habits and the needs of local communities. The rehabilitation process, completed in October this year, included a series of visits open to the public, carried out by the Town Hall. These visits, which took place in September, showed the rehabilitation works to mayors, operators, local agents and the community in general, accompanied by the presentation of a new management model for the market. The intervention, signed by the architect Bernardo Távora, son of the original author of the project, maintained the traditional and historic layout of the building, classified as a Monument of Public Interest.
Under the motto “Redo, Reencounter, Reinvent”, the City Council’s strategic plan aims to transform the Municipal Market into a space that is more than just a point of sale, but a place that reflects the tradition, culture and identity of Santa Maria da Feira. The building, located in the heart of the city, is seen as an “architectural jewel” that connects the past with the present, bringing a renewed dynamism to the historic center.
With the reopening, the Municipal Market hopes to attract not only locals, but also visitors from other regions, with a diversified offer and an atmosphere that combines tradition with modernity. This new chapter of the market symbolizes the municipality’s commitment to preserving the city’s cultural and architectural heritage, while adapting it to the challenges and demands of today.
